For 12 years, I had anxiety about my dog Jake’s birthdays. Each one felt like a reminder of time slipping away, of the inevitable day when I’d have to say goodbye to my beloved boy. One year older. One more year gone. I found myself cringing with each passing year, crying over his age when he was just three years old. I started an entire pet photography business inspired by my efforts to make a piece of Jake live forever.
Sure, I took Jake to Sonic to get cheeseburgers or we’d make him a steak. He loved vanilla ice cream and crème brûlée. It brought me joy and I loved treating him, but there was never much fanfare and I don’t have many positive core memories of his birthdays. But everything changed when I met The Barkday Planner. I admired her creativity and thought pet party planning was an ‘adorable’ idea. I completely underestimated the impact of her work and how teaming up with Amanda to launch pet party photoshoots at our studio would change my perspective on my own pets getting older.
Our “test run” to launch dog birthday photoshoots was my Saint Bernard, Puzzle’s, first birthday in 2023. It was aptly themed “Little Miss Sunshine and Rainbows” for her bubbly demeanor and sun-shiny personality. Instead of dreading the day, I decided to embrace it with open arms and a camera in hand. Over the past year, our collaboration has been wildly popular with Dallas-Fort Worth pet parents, and these joyous events have transformed my mindset in ways I never imagined.
The first time we planned a birthday party photoshoot for Puzzle, I was excited to make cute photos of my puppy. But would it really make a difference in my anxiety about her getting one year older? The answer, to my surprise, was a resounding yes. As Amanda set up the rainbow of balloons and decorations, prepared a special cake, and dressed Puzzle in her birthday bandana, I found myself smiling and laughing. The anticipation of capturing these moments on camera filled me with excitement rather than sorrow.
The photoshoot became an opportunity to celebrate Puzzle’s life and our time together. Instead of focusing on the year slipping by, I started cherishing the core memories we were creating. The laughter, the silly poses, the pure joy radiating from Puzzle as she indulged in her birthday treats – these moments turned a once-dreaded day into one I now eagerly look forward to months in advance.
For her second birthday, I asked The Barkday Planner for something “bear-themed.” I call Puzzle “bestie bear” and tell her she’s “the prettiest bear in the whole bear world” daily. We ordered a forest backdrop for our studio, pulled out the trees from our Christmas pet photography mini sessions, and with a touch of Barkday Planner magic, Camp Puzzle was open.
My favorite part of this year’s birthday photoshoot was the cake. Dog-safe and designed to look like a giant s’more, it was THE CUTEST! Apparently it tasted as good as it looked, because Puzzle couldn’t get enough of it.
Birthday party photoshoots have become a tradition I treasure deeply. They have allowed me to capture the essence of Puzzle’s personality and our bond in a series of whimsical, happy, delightful photographs. These images are more than just pictures; they are a testament to the love and happiness Puzzle brings into my life.
One of the most unexpected benefits of these birthday party photoshoots is how they’ve helped me cope with the inevitable aging of my pets. While I still feel a pang of sadness when I think about Puzzle getting older, the joy and laughter from the birthday party photoshoots have provided a much-needed balance. They remind me that every moment with my pets is precious and worth celebrating and I’m making the best memories in the process.
As I look forward to many more birthday photoshoots with Puzzle, I am grateful for this newfound perspective. The days I once dreaded have become some of my happiest memories, and I now eagerly anticipate each new birthday, ready to celebrate, laugh, and create more wonderful memories with my best girl.
So, here’s to many more hilarious party photoshoots, to celebrating life’s moments, and to finding joy in every year we share with our beloved pets. Cheers!
